THE SOCIETY
The International Sister Fidelma Society came into being at the end of 2001, and has members in over a dozen countries. David Robert Wooten asked Peter Tremayne in 2000 if he could put up a Sister Fidelma website, merely as a “showcase” for the novels, and for fans to have a resource for all of the stories. In the first year, so many people contacted David that he asked the author if he had any objection to forming the Society – fortunately for fans worldwide, Peter gave his blessings, and in fact serves as Patron of the Society.
In addition to this website, the Society issues a printed magazine three times a year entitled The Brehon, (as of 2025 we will be in our 24th year of publication), available exclusively to those who become annual members.
The initial version of this publication ran to 16 pages an issue, with a cardstock cover and black & white photographs. However, with time the issue grew to a fairly-consistent 20 pages, and with the cost of color printing coming down somewhat, the entire issue was slowly converted to full-color inside and out. With more and more people readily accepting the PDF digital format, The Brehon was switched over to an all-digital format, with even more color possibilities – and additional pages when news overflows.
The Brehon updates fans with exclusives on the author and his character, contributions by both fans and fellow authors, information about the artists involved with the various Fidelma covers, etc.
One of the main goals of this journal is encouraging feedback from the readers themselves. The worldwide readership of the Sister Fidelma Mysteries continues to expand with each new tale, and new devotees of the religiuse continue to express their feelings about the detective and her author. We encourage members to share with fellow readers how they first came across Sister Fidelma – what it is they especially like about the character(s), the stories, etc., and we publish as many as space allows.
